EDMUND WILSON – ENERGISE (Oaklands)
Edmund Wilson swimming pool will be closing on Sunday 13th December 2009.
The new Energise Centre (formerly Oaklands Sports Centre) will open on Monday 14th December 2009.
YCBC first session at the Energise Centre will be Thursday 17th December 2009, swimming times remaining the same

Who Was Edmund Wilson??
Edmund
Wilson encouraged and participated in numerous swimming events for the majority
of his active life.
Born
in York in 1824, he had a boot and shoe-making business in Parliament Street. He
married twice, but seems to have left no children.
In
1879, he retired from the business, becoming well known for taking a morning dip
in Yearsley Baths and supporting galas held there.
For
example, in 1882, he sponsored a diving for plates competition for boys and gave
John Pavis, the winner, three shillings for bringing up five plates.
On the final evening, he sponsored races, for “the purpose of encouraging the juvenile population of York to learn the art of swimming”. This was important as in 1881 and 1882 more than one person a week died from drowning in the area.
In the early 1900s, he left his York, Portland Street home for Torquay and it was there that he died in 1912, leaving £7,025 for the York City to invest and fund instructors at three clubs, the residue of the income to be used for “the instruction, promotion, and encouragement of swimming, the provision and upkeep of swimming baths and instruction in life saving”.
Edmund
Wilson once said that “the whole Corporation ought to be thrown over Ouse
Bridge into the river” (a councillor responding said that his legacy said that
they would all be rescued).
What Edmund Wilson left to the city was the equivalent of more than £400,000 now.
